Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is a gentle, non-invasive modality that works with the fluid, energetic system of the body to optimize health and heal injury both physical and emotional. Even though the touch is light, it contacts us deeply involving our very life force as a healing mechanism. BCST encourages the body’s own healing resources to, within any pattern of dysfunction or distress, facilitate a reconnection to natural biodynamic forces and the stillness from which they arise.
The intention of BCST is to encourage new levels of order and balance in the mind and body. This work is truly an art of listening to the language of the body, sensing and understanding that language, and appropriately responding to the healing intentions of the human system. The skill of the therapist is to listen and allow things to change from the inside out rather than forcing something from the outside in.
Treatment is comprised of a gentle attentive touch, which is both diagnostic and therapeutic. Clients may feel deep relaxation and become aware of alterations in fluid pressures, tissue motions, heat, tingling, feeling-states and energy movement. The work is not only about physical distress but is an experiential exploration that encompasses our mental processes, feelings, emotions and their physical manifestations.
Different than most modalities, it works with what the client's body presents not a protocol applied to it from a theoretical perspective. Therefore, it is quite empowering to the client because what is addressed is what is presented in that moment. Often there is deep knowledge gained, insight into our past experiences that have stayed with us somatically for a reason.
Chronic states of illness result when the resources that help us to dissipate or adapt to stressful forces become overwhelmed. Healing is not just about getting rid of symptoms, but about supporting and integrating individual wholeness.
The body’s structure governs its function, so also its function governs its structure. If we hold ourselves due to the presence of certain feelings and attitudes (such as fear, anger or sadness) the body becomes organized accordingly. Certain muscles may be used, while others are not. A particular pattern will be created, which then influences how we function. In this way structure and function are mutually perpetuating, creating patterns that become habituated.
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy reaches all systems of the body: musculoskeletal, physiological, psychological, so that it affects our bones, muscles, ligaments, organs, fluids even our autonomic nervous system which can, all too often in meeting the world, keep us in a reactive, fight/flight state.
One of the great strengths of craniosacral work is in helping the nervous system to settle to alleviate anxiety, panic attacks, tension and depression. Migraines, TMJ syndrome and gastrointestinal issues can be physical manifestations of these feeling states. Accidents, such as concussion can also contribute to them.
Craniosacral treatment works with the physiology of the body, not against it. The intelligence of symptoms is acknowledged as well as the intelligence of the body’s attempt to deal with them. The emphasis of the work is to sense how the body is expressing its health, even within the most acute resistances and pathologies.
An ideal treatment for the day to day stresses and long -term pressures of living and working in an urban environment, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy appeals to those who are looking for a gentle approach to healing without being subjected to intense physical manipulation or outside forces.
*Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and Anxiety*
Anxiety is meant to be a tool of the human body as a healthy response to stress or dangerous situations. We are all equipped to handle occasional bouts of unreleased anxiety, but if that anxiety doesn’t go away or if it recurs frequently, it can lead to longer term health problems including insomnia, high blood pressure, digestive disorders, skin problems, mood swings, depression, heart palpitations and trouble breathing.
When people experience BCST, the body relaxes, the brain activities slow down, and the defense mechanisms of the sympathetic nervous system get out of the way. Patients experience sensations including pain relief, a sense of peace, feelings of expansion, being put into a dream or sleep-like state and an altered sense of being. This state of deep relaxation allows the receiver to function better overall as well as helping him or her to release stored tension and trauma. By releasing physical and emotional restrictions, BCST can gently help to address the root causes of anxiety without the use of medications.
